Akhnoor a Historical Place :
The famous Chenab river which is an inseparable part of the Akhnoor town starts its journey from the High passes of Himachal Pardesh and two separate streams of Chandra and Bhaga rivulets join to form the Chandrabhaga river at Tandi. As when this Chanderbhaga river meets the Marau river at Bhandara kot near Kishtwar, it becomes the Chenab river and it is the place where the river first enters the plains of India and then to Pakistan.
It said that at this place the lost eyesight of the Mughal emperor's wife got back and hence this place was named Akhnoor "Ank" means eye and Noor means vision. This historically famous town has been the northernmost part of the ancient Indus valley civilization as excavations in his area have revealed many artifacts belonging to the glorious Indus valley civilization.
There is also an ancient Buddhist monastery excavated in Ambaran village near Akhnoor that dates back to the 1st to 7th century BC. It is the eighth place in the world where Buddha relics have been found in a Stupa. Akhnoor Fort :
Akhnoor Fort is a beautiful and peaceful Fort which is situated in the Historical Town Akhnoor of District Jammu in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. This beautiful Fort was built by Raja Alam Singh in the year 1802 with beautiful architecture but the work for the construction of this fort began in 1762 by his father, Raja Tegh Singh which was completed by Alam Singh, his son in 1802. The Akhnoor Fort is situated at a distance of twenty-eight kilometers from Jammu city, loaded with rich fortifications meant to provide protection to its people. This large fort is a big example of Indian Military architecture, built across two floors. This amazing fort has a thick, strong wall with bastions as well as two-storeyed watch towers guarding its parameters with beautiful arches and Murals. Grand Palace of Raja Alum Singh, the monarch of the fort is inside the fort. The fort stands in the ancient town that is known for archaeological remains of the Harappan civilization and has been protected under the Archaeological Survey of India
In Ancient Times, The fort was known as Asikni and after a few years, the name was changed to Akhnoor fort. The fort is very close to the bank of the Chenab river and that is the thing for it is very famous. It was constructed in the 19th century. The fort finds its place in history for its antiquity and historical importance.
Jio Pota Ghat is situated on the right bank of the Chadrabhaga river which is today's river Chenab at Akhnoor. Jio Pota ghat, a historically famous place got its name from the Jia Pota tree whose botanical name is Putranjiva roxburghlii of Euphorbiaceel family under whose shade, Raj Tilak ceremony of the founder of Jammu and Kashmir State Maharaja Gulab Singh Ji took place. The coronation at this historically famous Ghat would always remain etched in the collective psyche of the people of J&K and more particularly the Dogras as the first concrete step towards the foundation of the State of Jammu and Kashmir now Union Territory. It was on 17th June 1822, that the magnanimous Maharaja Ranjit Singh the most powerful king in the realm of Hindustan coronated Gulab Singh as Raja(King) of the Jammu region at Jio Pota in the backdrop of Akhnoor fort and lapped by icy waves of river Chenab. & to commemorate the coronation day of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the commemorative tablet has been installed at the ghat depicting the scene of Raj tilak ceremony. People in large numbers while visiting Akhnoor especially also visit this site to have glimpses of the scene.
The importance of this place lies in the fact that Ji Pota ghat probably witnesses the march of civilization proper from the existence of early man. Historians consider Akhnoor as the northernmost point of the Indus Valley civilization. it is pertinent to mention here that river the Chenab is of the five rivers of Punjab where historians believed that Vedas were composed by the Aryans and this old ghat and its adjoining settlements may have seen the coming and spread of Aryans.
Kameshwar Temple :
This historical and famous Kameshwar Temple has two big Shiv Lingams and two idols of Nandi(the Bull God) at the main entrance of the temple and also one can find near the entrance, the idols Chitragupta, Saneeswra, and Dharamaraja which give soothing touch to one's mind and soul.
It is believed to be one of the ancient temples dating back to five thousand years back during the days of Pandavas. The main sanctum sanctorum has three shiva lingams in irregular shapes along with the idols of 3 Ganesh. There are also shrines of Hanuman, Ram Lakshman- Sita Hanuman, Natraj, and Kali along with Shiva, Indra, Shiv Parwati, Ganesh, and Panchmukh Hanuman in Kameshwar Temple. A heavy rush of devotees is mostly witnessed here every time.
Sant Baba Sunder Singh Gurdwara :
This historical and religiously famous Sant Baba Sunder Singh Gurdwara is located along the Chenab river. This Gurdwara Tapo Asthan Sant Baba Sunder Singh Ji was built in the memory of a Sikh Sant who sat here near the river in meditation at Alkhmoor Town and this famous religious place was built by the Sikh Sangat of Jammu. A large number of devotees from all walks of life also visit here to pay due respect to the holy saint and take blessings from here.
